Astrakhan region was visited by a representative of the German Embassy in Moscow

On May 27-28, 2019, the Head of the Working Staff for Cooperation with Russian Regions of the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Moscow Sebastian Brokelmann visited the Astrakhan Region with a short-term visit.

The visit was aimed at acquaintance with the socio-economic situation in the region and identification of possible areas and areas of interest to both Astrakhan and German entrepreneurs, to establish contacts and “revitalize” the general background of Russian-German cooperation at the interregional level. Mr. Brokelmann also indicated interest in enhancing cooperation in the humanitarian sphere.

In this regard, a visit to Astrakhan State University was organized, where Mr. Brokelmann discussed with the leadership the possibilities of further expanding cooperation in the field of education and science, and expressed readiness to assist in finding partners in Germany.

At a broad meeting with students and teachers, Mr. Brokelmann gave a lecture on the state of Russian-German relations at the present stage, focusing on the diametrically opposite approaches of Russia and Germany to the assessments of some key topics on the international agenda. At the same time, he stressed that, despite the various political positions, Germany views Russia as the most important economic partner and ally in countering contemporary challenges and threats common to Germany and Russia.

At the ASU, Mr. Brokelmann visited the Caspian Higher School of Translation, met with representatives of the AstraDeutsch Center for International Programs and Testing in German, and expressed his willingness to assist in expanding teaching opportunities at ASU of Germanic studies.

A visit to Gymnasium No. 3, which closely cooperates with partners from Germany in the framework of several educational programs, and the Agency for Youth Affairs was also organized, where a project of cooperation between the Astrakhan region and the Youth Association of the city of Ziegen in Germany was presented as part of annual youth exchanges.

During the visit, Mr. Brokelmann was given the opportunity to visit the Special Economic Zone “Lotos”, whose management provided detailed information on the current state of development of the zone and its future prospects.

Mr. Brokelmann also visited the Astrakhan shipbuilding plant “Lotos” and the VTS-port.

The results of Mr. Brokelmann's stay in the Astrakhan Region were summarized at a meeting with the Acting Minister of International and Foreign Economic Relations of the Astrakhan Region Vladimir Golovkov. The possibility of holding in the short term a presentation of the Astrakhan region, plans for the development of the SEZ and the North-South ITC at the German Embassy and at the Russian-German Chamber of Commerce in Moscow was agreed.

Also, the representative of the Embassy stressed the willingness to assist in further expanding contacts with partners in Germany in the field of education and culture.
